How Much Does A Golf Cart Weigh?

by BogeyBreakingGolf

How important is it to know how much your golf carts weigh?

Well, that depends. If you want to know if heavier carts perform better than lighter ones, weight is not very important.

However, if you plan on buying the perfect trailer to drive it to and from the course, knowing your golf cart weight is very important.

A few lines down, you will find the average golf cart weight.

Then, throughout the rest of the post, you’ll find out what parts are responsible for the added weight, if gas carts are heavier than electric, the heaviest cart in the world, and how many people your cart can carry.

Enjoy!

What Is The Average Weight Of A Golf Cart

Take this with a pinch of salt, but the average weight of a golf cart is 800 lbs (pounds).

The reason for you taking that salt is because this can quickly get heavier or lighter by 300 lbs.

800 lbs would be the most common, but everything from accessories to batteries and everything in between can affect the overall weight.

In the section right below this one, you will learn how much certain parts of the golf cart will influence the total weight.

What Makes Your Golf Cart Heavier Or Lighter

Additional Accessories

The number of accessories you’ve added to the cart will increase the weight gradually. The lightest golf cart will be the standard stock versions dealers sell.

For example, a common additional feature like a built-in drink cooler could add 20-40 lbs when fully stocked.

Weather blockers are another common addition to golf carts in windy/rainy areas.

These blockers are usually installed on the side of the cart to shield you from the elements, similar to the front window.

But depending on the material you use, they can add on a significant amount of weight.

Golfers never consider weight when adding personal touches to their cart, but they definitely add up in the end.

Batteries

Depending on the needs of your golf cart, batteries can add from as little as 40 lbs to 300+ lbs.

The average battery will weigh anywhere from 40-80 lbs each.

So if you have a golf cart that requires just one battery, it won’t make too much of a difference, But having a golf cart that requires 3-4, which isn’t uncommon, could add 120-320 lbs easily.

This means that if you think your cart is heavier and want to shed some weight, you could try to find lighter batteries.

Usually, people will start stripping weight from frames or seats before considering batteries.

Seats

Golf carts come in different shapes and sizes, the most common being a 2-seater, but 4, 6, and even 8-seaters are available.

Like earlier, take this next estimate with another pinch of salt, but you add 100-140 lbs of weight for every two additional seats.

The seats themselves won’t weigh this much. But the weight will shoot up because you will have to add weight to the frame and potentially add more batteries or bigger motors.

This means a 6 seater will be heavier than a similar 2 seater by 200-280 lbs.

And that’s not considering the weight of all the additional passengers.

Wheels

Getting bigger and better wheels is one of the most common modifications to a golf cart.

Bigger wheels mean better grip and more control, allowing the golf cart to achieve faster speeds.

That said, even if you have the biggest wheels, they won’t weigh much more than 20 lbs a wheel.

Assuming you’re still using all 4 wheels, this could add anywhere from 40-80 lbs overall.

Frame

The actual frame of the golf cart can drastically affect the overall weight.

Depending on how big the frame is, which will be determined by how many seats the cart has, the materials used will all pile together to the final weights.

For example, if you’re wealthy and have a sweet hookup, a golf cart with a carbon fiber frame weighs much less than a steel-framed one.

How much do they weigh? Unfortunately, unless you’re the actual manufacturer or you’ve completely stripped the cart of everything to find out, you won’t know.

Mechanical Parts

Lastly, the mechanical parts that keep your cart moving around the golf course contribute to the weight.

For example, a standard motor weighs 55-65 lbs or thereabouts.

The main difference between these parts and the rest of the list is there probably isn’t a weight to shave a few pounds off without breaking your cart.

Are Some Golf Cart Brands Heavier Than Others?

Yes and no… I know exactly the answer you were looking for!

But the reason for the safe answer is that brands make more than one golf cart, so there will always be some carts made by brand A that will be heavier than brand B.

However, we can determine which golf cart brands have the heaviest in their catalog.

The top 3 is as follows:

1st – Yamaha – 1384 lbs

2nd – Club Car – 1293 lbs

3rd – E-Z-GO – 1206 lbs

That is just the heaviest 2-seater cart they sell each, but they all sell models that weigh as little as 600 lbs and up.

Which Is Heavier Gas Or Electric Golf Carts?

The short answer is an electric golf cart is heavier and funnily enough they are the faster of the two also.

Electric golf carts are heavier because they rely solely on the power of batteries to power the cart. As we mentioned before, these batteries are heavy.

So, gas golf carts can’t compete in terms of golf cart weight since they don’t need as many batteries.

How much heavier can they be?

Roughly if you take two identical models with the only difference being their power source, you can expect the electric model to be 200-300 lbs heavier.

What Is The Heaviest Golf Cart?

Okay, so the heaviest golf cart in the world doesn’t have an official weight…

So, how can we know it’s the heaviest? Well, because it’s the biggest cart in the world, I’m sure the math will add up.

Mike’s Golf Carts made the cart, measurin 31 ft 6.74 inches from front to back. It’s also got 20-inch wheels and massive 49-inch tires.

Not to mention 3 tables with 4 seats surrounding each one.

If you add all that up, you’ll find it has to be the heaviest golf cart in the world.

In second place is any golf cart your mother-in-law is sitting in…

How Much Weight Can A Golf Cart Handle?

Okay, so it’s important to note that we are talking about stock golf carts without any modifications to affect the golf cart weight limit.

But a standard out-of-the-box golf cart is designed to handle golfers and passengers up to 250 lbs each. Meaning a 2 seater can handle up to 500 lbs of passengers, but it will affect performance.

So if you try to squeeze another person in, you may encounter problems.

If it’s a 4-seater, multiply the above by two, and you’ll have your answer.
