Can You Wear Golf Shoes Casually?

by BogeyBreakingGolf

Can you wear golf shoes casually? Yes. Should you wear golf shoes casually? Well, it depends.

Over the years, golf shoe manufacturers are turning out tons of golf shoes that resemble all our favorite sneakers.

From Adidas to Jordans, this era of golfers is spoiled in terms of choice and fashion compared to the previous generation.

Even the pro players have started wearing casual shoes as they play.

Players like John Rahm, Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, and more have stepped away from the more traditional look.

While they look great on the course, should you wear them casually?

Are spiked shoes okay to wear?

How should you wear them?

And what are the setbacks of wearing them daily?

If you want the answer to any of these questions, keep reading, as they’re all covered in this post.

Spiked Golf Shoes Are Not For Everyday Use

To begin with, it is essential to note that a spiked golf shoe is not meant to be worn casually.

This is one of the main reasons some golfers will prefer spikeless golf shoes.

Spiked golf shoes are designed for maximum comfort and performance on the golf course.

Even though the only difference between some spiked and spikeless shoes is the sole, they can be dangerous to wear casually.

These spikes can make surfaces like hardwood flooring or tiles feel like walking on ice if you don’t have a sure footing.

The spikes are designed to dig into turf but not the floor of your local grocery store.

Not only that, but they can scratch, scuff, tear, and damage the floor you walk on, as well as wear down the spikes themselves.

Making them less effective on the course.

Spikeless Golf Shoes Can Make For Great Walking Shoes

A spikeless golf shoe can be fantastic as an everyday walking shoe too.

Most golf shoe companies have specifically designed their spikeless shoes to be worn by players who love to walk.

They have added built-in custom comfort features to accommodate this.

Plus, plenty of golf shoes are on the market today for those of you who suffer from flat feet.

Playing off the comfort level and being built for walking makes them an excellent option for a nice stroll.

Not just down the fairways but around the block too.

Tips For Picking Casual Golf Shoes

Choose Colors That Work With Everything

This blog’s first and most important tip is choosing the right colors.

Looking at golf shoes you plan to wear everywhere, you can’t just think about the golf course anymore.

Maybe you’re a fan of Ricky Fowler back in the day and want a pair of orange shoes to match your top or the color combo.

You will look great on the course (if you’re into that sort of thing), but orange shoes will be difficult to make outfits for off the course.

The safe bets would be colors like white, black, or grey.

White spikeless golf shoes go with slacks, shorts, jeans, sweatpants, and chinos. They go with everything.

The same goes for black and grey.

I recommend going for solid colors, all white, all black, or all grey. It will make your job of picking outfits easier both on and off the course.

There is no problem choosing something with more colors and patterns it just means your wardrobe options are restricted.

Choose A Pair That Don’t Look Like They’re Golf Shoes

Remember that these shoes are not just for the course, so while your traditional Footjoy golf shoes won’t look out of place on the course, they will be anywhere else.

Walking around the streets in traditional golf shoes will make you look like you’re about to burst out and begin tap dancing.

That’s not the look you want, especially if you can’t tap dance!

No, when looking for shoes, you want a pair that nobody would even think were golf shoes.

You want shoes that may even have your playing partners asking, “Why don’t you wear golf shoes?”.

The more regular they look, the better it is for you.

Choose A Comfortable Pair Of Golf Shoes

We left this tip for last because you should already be looking for your shoes to fit properly and be comfortable to walk in.

But this is especially important for golf shoes as you will be wearing them playing golf, walking around at a golf tournament, and when you’re off the course.

So it makes no sense to pick a pair that looks good when they’re going to dig into your heel, hurt your toes, and mess up your foot in general.

Comfortable shoes are a must.

Wearing Golf Shoes Casually Fashion Tips

Below, I will share a fashion guide you can use to ensure you don’t make a fool of yourself in public. Looking like you got dressed in the dark while drunk beyond belief.

I’ve had a lot of help with the below tips over the years. It may be hard to believe from my photo on the About Us page but I wasn’t always a style guru.

My stylist helped me come a long way. (AKA Female family members, partners, and colleagues!)

First, you need to focus on how your golf shoes colors match your outfit.

Like I mentioned earlier, if you stick with neutral colors, you can’t go wrong matching them up with almost anything.

But what about those of you who like wearing big bright wild colors and designs?

Well, you can wear them you just have to be a little more careful selecting the rest of your outfit.

Ideally, if your shoes are bright and loud, let them be your outfit’s showpiece. Meaning the rest of your outfit should consist of plain or subtle color schemes.

Don’t mix your casual golf shoes with your office attire either. The only way you can do this is by opting for a traditonal dress shoe style golf shoe. This way it won’t look too out of place.

Lastly, and the most important fashion tip is to keep your shoes squeaky clean. Other golfers on the course may not bat an eyelid at dirty shoes on the course but they stand out everywhere else.

Always make sure they are clean. Something you can try is keeping wet wipes in the car for a quick clean down after your round.

Pros Of Wearing Golf Shoes Casually

Versatile Use: Using your golf shoes for more than just playing a round can save you both time and money.

Time Saver: Wearing your golf shoes away from the course saves you a lot of time when you forget your regular shoes at home.

Money Saver: Using your golf shoes casually can save you money since you won’t have to buy multiple pairs of shoes.

Stylish Options: New, modern golf shoes give players many stylish options that look great away from the course.

Comfort: As discussed earlier, new spikeless golf shoes make for amazing walkers. Companies have added comfort features to all these models to aid players in hiking around the course.

Cons Of Wearing Golf Shoes Casually

Wear And Tear: Wearing golf shoes more frequently will speed up the wearing-down process.

Risk of Damage: The number one downside of wearing your spiked shoes away from the course is the risk of damage to flooring.

Fashion Concerns: If you go with traditional-looking golf shoes, you will stick out like a sore thumb.

Now that you know you can wear them casually… Can you wear casual shoes on the golf course?
